I can't remember the last time we celebrated the 4th in the RAIN, but chalk up 2010 to that statistic. The day started out cloudy and drizzly, so we decided NOT to go to the cabin with 19 people and 5 dogs. By lunchtime, it was sunny down here and super dark clouds in Estes. We went to June's for smoked meat (Greg's specialty). The Wags went ahead and went to Estes to be with Pete and Lindy.
By dinner, the clouds started blowing in FAST. Meanwhile, Lindy kept sending pictures of their now beautiful afternoon in the mountains. Sigh.

Enter rain. Sometimes a downpour, sometimes lighter, but non-stop rain. From 7:00 until almost morning. We wondered if the city shows would be cancelled. While we waited for showtime, we grabbed Greg's contraband he brought back from TX and lit them in the street. It was a great lesson in teaching the kids to watch for cops...they had a BLAST watching the big stuff Brian lit. Except Zach, who screamed bloody murder and shook so bad I had to take him inside.
Then we loaded the cars to drive a few blocks away for a good view of the scheduled show. That never happened. We had to raise the hatch on the van to keep dry because merely looking out the windows didn't give us any view of the fireworks in the next town over. We sat like this for about 30 minutes and left.
The kids said "that was the best and worst 4th of July ever!"
Posing with our illegal fireworks
After a bottle rocket accidentally went into the neighbor's yard
Scared of the cop that wasn't a cop
Listen for Z at the end of this one....

Moors solved the cop problem by inviting their next door neighbor, Lee, a cop, to dinner and to help with the fireworks.
The constant question from the kids, as we saw other fireworks that evening was "are they illegal"?
